Floor Install Tips - Transitions Between Floors
Floor Installation Help Tips
Transitions between floors (threshold) - carpet to tile transitions, carpet to wood transitions and carpet edging
Transitions are needed between flooring sections, against or between thresholds (doorways) and edges. The Schluter Schiene (T Joiner Molding) is used when both surfaces are at the same level or reasonably close. The Reno V (Reducer Molding) is needed between a transition from tile or wood (high level surface) to a lower surface as in carpet or vinyl. There are many types, but the general categories of transition strips or moldings are Reducers meaning a transition for unlevel floor heights. T-moldings are used for equal elevations (heights), also called joiners. Edging are used when floors are butted against entrance ways, cabinets & fireplaces.
Consideration should be given to the number of doorways and thresholds when ordering a wood and/or laminate floor. Transition trim pieces are usually sold in 6' to 8' feet in length. These trim pieces must always be ordered with the floor you are purchasing, so as to have a match and give the supplier time to manufacture them if not in stock.
